Expert Review of Oceania's Vista

oceania cruise ship

The ships may not have all the gee-whiz deck-top attractions of megaships such as Royal Caribbean's Wonder of the Seas. But they offer serenity at sea in a relatively uncrowded setting, with a higher crew-to-passenger ratio than you'll find on mass-market vessels, more high-end restaurants and more elegant accommodations. Oceania is best for travelers who want to go beyond the most commonly visited ports and foodies who prioritize onboard dining.

An introduction to Oceania Cruises ships

Passengers are affable and well-travelled, and are generally drawn to the line for its semi-inclusiveness and focus on destination-driven cruise itineraries. That's a good thing, because you'll want to spend time in these cabins, which are graced with rich hues of grey and marble, and accented by recessed lighting that softly illuminates rooms by day and night. Beds are soft; linens are high-quality and crisp to the touch; and bathrooms are stocked with Bulgari toiletries as a matter of course. The line's Culinary Center has been dramatically expanded aboard Vista, and features interactive cooking stations with induction ranges next to an adjacent classroom for demonstrations and presentations. Passengers can bring up to six bottles of wine per cabin for consumption in their room.

More about Oceania Riviera

The pool deck is beautiful, with just the right number of soft padded loungers to accommodate everyone on a sunny sea day. Oceania offers a great middle ground in terms of experience and offerings—both grand and cozy, with a wider range of fare options than luxury lines, since it’s not all-inclusive. Go for excellent food and beverage, unique ports, good service, and a comfortable space you’ll be happy to come back to at the end of busy days on land. Its dining system doesn't work so well on weeklong cruises, forcing passengers to miss out on the much-touted specialty restaurants or eat rather late.

Cruises

Revel in the chance to explore the Old World like never before with Oceania Cruises. Farther north, consider one of our unique Iceland- and Greenland-intensive voyages or discover the medieval cities and fortresses lining the Baltic and the striking architecture and modern design of Scandinavia. Plenty of journeys to the famous castles of Scotland, the legendary landscapes of Ireland and the historical and iconic attractions of England are easily on hand as well. Crew members are professional and polite, and they know their product and customers thoroughly. Special requests and personal preferences are a hallmark of the staff in restaurants. The notable exception is poolside, where there don't seem to be enough cocktail servers to keep up with passenger demand.

From the Oceania Cruises Blog

Be careful — it's so fun trying out all the crazy concoctions that you might bust your drink budget if you haven't upgraded to the premium beverage package. Past Oceania cruisers might wonder where Waves' famous smoothies and power bowls got to. The answer is Vista's new "healthy" dining venue, Aquamar, set up on the opposite side of the Terrace Café from the Waves Grill. Oceania's Tranquility Beds are some of the best in the business, and I loved falling asleep between a snuggly duvet and 1,000-thread-count sheets. Even better, the bed is flanked by three-drawer nightstands, 100V plugs and USB ports and reading lights. I failed to find anything serious to critique about Vista, so what I didn't love about the ship is more about my personality than any real failing of the cruise line.

The company's cruise vessels stand apart from other midsized liners with low (1-to-2) crew-to-passenger ratios and unique voyages. In May 2019, by the OceaniaNEXT program were introduced fleetwide 200+ plant-based dining menus. The new items are available (upon request) in "Grand Dining Room" and "Terrace Cafe" at breakfast-lunch-dinner, and also dinner-only in all specialty restaurants. Tips are automatically charged to your onboard account at the rate of $16 per person, per day (half to housekeeping and half to dining staff).

Where does Oceania Insignia sail from?

The stunning wall mosaics set the tone for the sophisticated spread you can sample here. Think daily sushi, an array of fine cheeses, made-to-order omelets, pasta and steaks and premium ice cream (including one Humphry Slocombe flavor at lunch and dinner). The vegetarian options weren't always the best at the Terrace Café, though it often had gluten-free pasta. In addition, each ship has a main Grand Dining Room that also has a Jacques Pépin tie-in; he created the venue's signature dishes. In another upgrade as compared to Oceania's other ships, Vista will boast 12 different culinary options for passengers — four of which will be new concepts for the brand.

Vista cruise ship review: What to expect on Oceania’s first Allura-class ship

A colour palette inspired by sea and sky brings a refreshing touch to the public spaces... Welcome aboard Oceania Allura, a ship that embodies the spirit of adventure and discovery as you set sail to explore the world's most captivating destinations. With its debut in 2025, Allura promises an enchanting cruise experience for all... Even a three-week cruise earns just one credit, which means it can take some time to reach the first elite tier — Bronze, which requires five credits. Even though they’re part of the same holding company, you won’t earn Oceania credits when sailing with Norwegian or Regent Seven Seas.

For most cruises, you will need a passport that is valid for six months after your trip ends. For round-trip sailings out of U.S. homeports, a birth certificate and government photo ID will suffice. It's up to each passenger to determine if any of the ports of call require additional visas. Vista's culinary center is three times larger than the versions found on sister ships Marina and Riviera.

Suites will increase the cost of the cruise but add more space for you to relax in your cabin. Oceania Cruises is a high-end cruise line with a reputation for excellent dining and the ability to visit a wider variety of ports because its ships aren’t as large as the typical cruise liner. It’s worth nothing that none of these specialty restaurants come with an upcharge. These are not a good pick for families, particularly those sailing with infants and toddlers.

In addition to multiple open-seating gourmet restaurants, Marina features memorable food and wine experiences at La Reserve by Wine Spectator as well as the opportunity for private dining at exclusive Privée. From the sparkling Lalique Grand Staircase to the exquisite Owner's Suites furnished, designer touches are everywhere, highlighting the finest residential design and furnishings. Vista is not an all-inclusive ship, but it's more inclusive than lines such as Celebrity Cruises or Holland America. Its fares cover all dining (except for private, wine-paired dinners), fitness classes, nonalcoholic beverages and in-port shuttles.

As a travel brand, Oceania is widely recognized for having the finest cuisine at sea. That's because there's never so much happening that attending a lecture or a game of shuffleboard would create a strain in a tight schedule. For many, that's a relief -- you can lie in the sun and sleep soundly at night knowing you only skipped golf putting. You'll be hard-pressed to find a crowded place onboard (except, perhaps, the buffet at peak mealtimes) -- and that can be both good and bad.

The top deck of the ship will revolve around a tranquil pool area, and — as is the case with all Oceania ships — the ship's interior will have a full-blown casino with an accompanying bar. At 67,000 tons, the vessel will be a tad bigger than Oceania's last two ships, Marina and Riviera. Come May 2023, Oceania will be unveiling the first vessel in the new Allura class of ships mentioned above, which will be just a tiny bit bigger than the Oceania-class ships. Completely transformed in 2019, Insignia exemplifies the re-inspiration of classic elegance while still feeling as comfortable as she always has.

Its three main non-suite cabin types – French Veranda, Veranda and Concierge Level staterooms – have identical interior layouts, so you're really only choosing between perks and exterior space. You can attend the one show each evening, but only if your dinner time allows for it. I could get dolled up and go to a steakhouse or Italian restaurant, or I could play it casual and eat on the buffet's outdoor terrace or at the pizzeria.

Impact on your credit may vary, as credit scores are independently determined by credit bureaus based on a number of factors including the financial decisions you make with other financial services organizations. For those looking for a weeklong cruise in the Caribbean, a trip departing from Miami and stopping in Mexico, Belize and Honduras starts at $1,399 per person. If you’re interested in Europe, a 10-day trip from Rome to Barcelona starts at $2,470 per person.
